In the spirit of retreat - Scorpio’s specialty - yet another Daylight Saving Time rings the dooming church bell, “falling back” into its solemn shroud.
As clocks set earlier on Sunday AM, Daylight Savings can bring dread for some: Less light paves simple segue-ways to Seasonal Affective Disorder (appropriately acronymed as SAD) and after the typical workday, it’s pitch dark. We are currently living through wild expectations to be productive in the upcoming “merriest time of the year” and witnessing an endless barrage of horrid news, censorship for basic compassion, political-corporate greed funding genocide. Gives quite a new meaning to “the Darker Days ahead”.
The U.S. witnessed more layoffs and business closures in the Summer of 2023, a “delayed” result of the pandemic’s economy. No surprise when “cabin fever” kicks in for the homebound and/or underfunded this Winter. Frigid weather has ALWAYS, throughout the ages, triggered fear of scarcity while our consumer-happy society pushes expectations of gifts and cheer in the course of one month, greater in volume than all year combined. The subject of money weighs upon us every Scorpio Season well into Capricorn’s time of the New Year. Interesting that both Signs have a hand in financial wellness/worry outside of their positions around the Holidaze.
Crapitalism’s marketing works overtime to brainwash, offering bought dopamine - though fleeting - in Sleepytime Bear Season. Beyond asking ourselves why we stuff our lives with stuff, Winter’s penchant of boredom of course encourages devilish distractions. With a lack of family or partners during “cuffing season” and in isolation, we doom scroll. Interpersonal drama, petty concerns, and bad behaviors are easy to pick up when living with constant tension.
The upsides to colder months DO exist, especially for morning people who willingly wake with the day and a piping cup of coffee. Homebodies find more excuses to stay in and opportunities to snuggle up to a loved one or a good book. Nesting CAN be a time to reflect spiritually or embrace the simplicity of the present moment: warmer meals, soothing hot liquids, tea leisurely sipped, healing baths, cozy sweaters and naps, yummy snacks, movies on Couch Island...
Our Scorpio Moon Letterboxd summoned a specific film feature to the mind’s surface for the upcoming lunation.
The 1996 erotic thriller Bound isn’t just dressed for Leather Weather and Scorpio Season, even though the femme fatale fashion code we mused about in the previous post is on perfect display. The Wachowski Sisters (Matrix Trilogy) were the masterminds of this sexually-charged sapphic neo-noir, played perfectly by vamp-meets-damsel-in-distress Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and butch ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon). Within the film lies a complex commentary about power and control on a larger scale than just in the plot.
As "star-crossed lovers seeking to escape an oppressive power structure that is unmistakably masculine in image, its violent enforcers incarnated as sneering goons in sharply tailored business suits" (Guardian)... The duo’s secretive, strategic yet sensual, sensitive nature dreamed of new lives, carrying out a heist of proportions with promise of fertile financial terrain in fresh freedom. Sure, the Scorpionic narratives show in the sultry sneaking around, but opposite the shockingly dark web of murder and money, bigger stakes displayed a very Scorpio Moon sensibility: that of vulnerability and strategy.
Queue Duran Duran’s “New Moon on Monday”, we are well on the way to experiencing the freeze of being in wait too long and wanting to break through the ice on November 13th… but with our wits in careful consideration as a guide.
A Scorpio Moon nods to the way in which the darkest moments can bring the brightest ideas and how we can still deeply love despite - IN SPITE OF - oppression and that (or who) which try to break us. A Scorpio New Moon in particular prides in the tireless trudge to find a bit of light, even if it means digging a discreet tunnel out of an oubliette, a resilient element of Scorpio undermined by the sexy cliches.
And where the whole World feels like a violence that cannot be escaped, we look to Scorpio’s creation of vulnerable spaces and ability to organize as a beacon of hope at this time. Adept at managing emotional challenges without pushing them away, feeling deeply is a gift, even if it can also feel like a curse. Due to Scorpio’s fixed nature, darkness can become lodged in the body and mind, difficult to remove. Avoidance is not an option. We feel it acutely in this very moment. It always finds a way to catch up to us.
Take heed, even though the last moment of the Taurus-Scorpio Eclipses was in October, we will be feeling the wrath of the Axis again this weekend.
As combustible but rulership-cozy Mars in Scorpio opposes Uranus in Taurus Retrograde, the God of War - though also perseverance - against the God of Unexpected Fates can create heightened aggressive energy, perhaps one of the most intense transits of 2023’s last quarter. This extreme combination can also lead to revolution, defiance, freedom and independence, though not without reactionary overboard. In the positive sense, this can represent taking action, finding assertion or leading to breakthroughs.
Monday’s Scorpio New Moon can feel more like a Full Moon in a lot of ways, highlighting what we need to move on from while still allowing us a sense of shedding in renewal. An immense need and strong determination may arise, though with some level of loyalty that may feel complicated, a trait that sets Scorpio apart from other Fixed Signs. A mid-season maven in true nature, Scorpio is always willing to persevere until a task is accomplished. As one cycle away from Eclipse Season, we are undergoing a molting process… and the more we embrace the change while steering our own course (even if it’s just our mindset), the better… though not without growing pains.
